May 20, 2023 – Highland County History Day
On Saturday May 20 we will be at the Hillsboro Library for Highland County History Day. The event will begin at 10:00, when the library opens, and conclude at 3:00, when the library closes. We are again co-sponsoring the special speaker, John Cooper as Abraham Lincoln. Schedule is as follows: 10:00 – Local Trivia, 11:00 – Women of Highland County, 12:00 – Civil War Reenactors, 1:00 – Abe Lincoln, 2:00 – Announcement of Prizes.
May 13-14, 2023 – Civil War Living History Event
The Southern Ohio Genealogical Society is participating in two special events in May. The weekend of May 13 & 14 we will be at the Civil War Living History event just outside Highland at 12265 Antioch Road. There will be Blue/Grey Militias in Mock Battle, Infantry/Artillery Demonstrations, Blacksmith Demonstrations, Tea Party at 12:30 pm in Saloon, Western Costume Contest at 3:00 pm Saturday, Sutlers and Craft Booths and Church Service 10:00 am Sunday. Hours are 10 am – 4 pm Saturday and Sunday. Re-enactors from Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana will represent the 48th OVI, 54th OVI, 21st Ohio Independent Artillery, 5th Ohio Light Artillery and various other Union and Confederate units.
April 13, 2023 – Beginning Military Research Using Fold3 with Dana Palmer, CG, CGL
There is no simple explanation for how to being researching your veteran ancestor. It depends on what branch of service they served in, which conflict, the time frame, whether it was in regular or volunteer units and whether they were enlisted or served as an officer. Many veterans have pension records, but not all.

The FamilySearch.org website(www.familysearch.org) has many resources available to researchers. Using filters and other advanced search techniques can help you find those elusive ancestors.

This program will be held in the conference room of the Highland County Business Center, 1487 N. High Street, Hillsboro, Ohio.
September 29,2022 – 5:30 p.m. – Cemetery and Tombstone Restoration.
John Glaze and John T. Willis, founders of Friends of Greenwood (FOG), will be presenting the program. (The Hillsboro Cemetery was originally named Greenwood Cemetery, thus the name of the group and acronym.) The program will be held at the Hillsboro Cemetery, so wear your comfortable shoes and clothes and bring a lawn chair.
